Materiality
A sustainability priority should have a credible connection to the company’s operations, value chain, stakeholders or long-term resilience. The group does not require every subsidiary to report against the same decorative set of themes.
Materiality can change as a business grows, enters new markets or acquires physical assets.
Lifecycle thinking
For long-lived assets, decisions about design, construction, maintenance, replacement and eventual renewal can shift cost and impact across decades.
For service and digital businesses, material issues may sit instead in privacy, labour, procurement, travel, technology or supplier relationships.
People and society
Sustainability includes the quality of relationships with employees, customers, suppliers and communities, not only environmental performance.
Human rights, fair treatment, safeguarding and responsible procurement are addressed through specific group policies because those subjects require more than a sustainability label.
Governance
Material sustainability risks and opportunities should have clear ownership and be considered in the same decision structures used for strategy, capital, operations and risk where relevant.
Creating a separate reporting process without operational ownership is unlikely to produce durable improvement.
Evidence and data
Metrics should be defined, sourced and controlled well enough for the intended use. Estimates may be appropriate, but they should not be presented as measured fact without explanation.
Where data quality is weak, improving the measurement process is a legitimate objective in its own right.
Review and disclosure
Public reporting should distinguish current performance, policy, aspiration and formal target. The policy should evolve as the group develops a stronger evidence base and more specific sector requirements.
